With the purpose of promoting the creation and promotion of literary works in the novel, short story and essay genres, the Cuban Book Institute , the Editorial Letras Cubanas and the Alejo Carpentier Foundation convene the twenty-third edition of the Novel, Short Story and Essay Award Alejo Carpentier, which will be governed by the following bases:
- All Cuban writers with official residence in the Republic of Cuba, with unpublished works, originally written in Spanish, that are not committed to any publisher and that are not pending resolution in another contest, may participate. They will be considered unpublished when at least 60% of the texts have not been published before.
- The works will be sent printed or by email using a pdf file. In the case of the printed ones, three copies must be delivered, duly numbered and stapled, written on 8 ½ x 11 inch sheets, on one side, typed or computerized, double spaced and with a legible font size, not less than of 10 points. If the work includes illustrations, these must be online, in black and white, and must be presented on a CD, with a resolution of no less than 300 dpi, and a printed proof, or on paper with a clarity that allows it to be scanned or reproduced. by other techniques. If the email modality is chosen, the characteristics of extension, letter and format must be maintained.
- The page limits of the competing works must be:
Novel: 150 minimum and up to 400 maximum.
Cuento (collection of short stories): 80 minimum and up to 200 maximum.
Test or set of tests: 150 as a minimum and up to 300 as a maximum.
- Themes are free. In the case of the essay, it must refer to matters of an artistic and literary nature.
- The authors will compete with a pseudonym and, in a separate envelope, will include their full name, address, telephone, email or any other form of communication, and a brief curriculum. If the e-mail modality is chosen, two files must be sent, one with the work itself, in which the pseudonym must appear and the other with a letter, whose file name will be the pseudonym itself and which will contain the personal data of the contestant. Any violation of these requirements implies the disqualification of the originals.
- You can only participate in one of the summoned genres.
- The authors awarded in previous calls must wait 3 years to compete again in the genre where they were awarded.
- The Jury, three members for each gender, will be made up of intellectuals of recognized prestige, among whom could be an editor, chaired in each case by a representative of the convening institutions, plus a coordinator of the Jury's work. Decisions will be made by simple majority and the final results are final. The Jury may recommend to Editorial Letras Cubanas, with preference, and to other publishers, the publication of works that are finalists.
- The members of the Jury will be announced opportunely.
- A single and indivisible prize will be awarded for each gender, consisting of:
Novel ——— 70,000 pesos (MN)
Tale ——— 70,000 pesos (MN)
Essay ——— 70,000 pesos (MN)
Accreditation diploma, the publication of the works by Editorial Letras Cubanas and the payment of copyright according to current legislation.
Editorial Letras Cubanas will retain the exclusive rights for five years for the publication of the winning works. During this period, the publication of the works by a foreign publishing house must be previously coordinated with Editorial Letras Cubanas and, if materialized, the new edition must mention the award received.

- No correspondence will be maintained with the contestants.
- The Jury's decision, which will be unappealable, will be announced in a timely manner through the media and on the website of Letras Cubanas (www.letrascubanas.cult.cu). The prizes will be awarded in a ceremony that will be part of the general program of the International Book Fair, Havana 2023.
- The organizers do not undertake to return the originals. The works in pdf format. that are not winners will be destroyed. The organizers are not committed to any possible anomaly suffered by the files sent by email, be it deterioration, copying or plagiarism.
- Participation in the Prize implies full acceptance of these rules.
