intellectual Graziella Pogolotti dedicates her article entitled Emilito, published today by Juventud Rebelde, to evoke Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring, remembered, above all, as a historian of the city.
Remember that Emilio was born on August 23, 1889 and that his projection in Cuban society and culture exceeded that founding work, without a doubt important.
He adds that “His efforts joined the efforts of the emerging generation, which emerged at the beginning of the 20th century with the purpose of rescuing hope in the country, after the frustration caused by the North American intervention after 30 years of struggle in favor of independence".
Emilio Roig could have accommodated himself to the enjoyment of the profits derived from the administration of a prestigious law firm. Instead, he chose to respond to the call of a vocation of service, he says
Pogolotti adds that from his very early youth he practiced journalism in publications of the most diverse nature. In his articles in Carteles, a widely circulated magazine, he courageously held a critical position against Machado's tyranny. He was also in charge of the writing of the Social magazine, in which he played a decisive role in supporting the avant-garde renewal of the arts and letters.
It stands out that with his well-earned authority and prestige, his personality was projected as the articulating axis of the active and heterogeneous Retail Group.
I still remember him. I was very young then. I was about to start my studies at the University. Always restless, he could manifest himself in explosive terms as he did during the outrage of the US Marines against the statue of José Martí in Central Park, Pogolotti says in his article.
On silent nights in the Plaza de la Catedral, under the gates of the Lombillo Palace, he organized series of lectures on Cuban history. Those talks aroused my interest in knowing the hidden twists and turns of the history of my country. In this way, Emilito tirelessly continued his emancipatory preaching, says the writer.
