The choreographic universe of Cuba's prima ballerina assoluta is dealt with in the important volume entitled The Choreographic Art of Alicia Alonso, written by Cuban researcher and critic Pedro Simon.

The research under the Ediciones Cumbres publishing house gathers significant characteristics, as it delves into a little-explored facet of the mythical Cuban artist, but one that is as significant as her career as a dancer or teacher.

"Alicia Alonso is a multifaceted figure -expressed by the author of the book, Dr. Pedro Simón-, her imprint can be valued in many ways: she is the great dancer, the great teacher, and, also, the great choreographer. Her performance in each of these facets is so excellent that, in a certain way, they overshadow others that are as important as the first ones, and that happens with the choreography."

The critic considered Alicia's choreographic work to be inescapable and of the utmost importance, which is why he asserted: "if she had only choreographed, her name would also be written in world history for the excellence of her creations."

Through this volume, we approach not only to recognized versions of the classics but also to works of absolute originality and diverse style that the creator did.

In more than 800 pages, Alonso's complete catalog as a choreographer is recorded, covering practically eight decades of work.

"This is a book that gathers the research, for years, of many colleagues and mine, in particular; compiling and analyzing, trying to find the paths, the reasons, the bases of this aspect of artistic work," said Pedro Simón.

He also stressed that the research covers from the first choreographic incursions of Alonso to the last ones, all of them approached by a dozen of distinguished Cuban and foreign specialists, who have analyzed with rigor and depth the choreographic art of this great maestro.

"It was made in the manner of multiple appraisals -explained Pedro Simón-, since the specialists have written about various works created by her, that is, although I do the concept of the book, the prologue, the notes and also made the general appraisal, I was interested that the particular assessments of each work were made by various specialists who provided a more impartial, more objective view of the choreographic values."

In addition, the expert stressed that the material is a repository of a great amount of information since it includes the complete catalog and the most important works of its creative corpus are valued.

"In it, there are a series of texts by Alicia herself that she valued these works and in which she reflected the choreographic work in particular: what the choreographic work was for her, how it arose, what concepts she had for doing it.  In this way, we get a better idea of what her poetics was in the work of choreography. This gives us light to better judge the work she does later on."

Complementary texts enrich the research, such as those related to Alicia Alonso and music, as well as other elements of choreography in historical and aesthetic aspects that also help to better understand the choreographic work.

This book is richly illustrated and constitutes reference material since its information is not found elsewhere and it has a very complete evaluation of Alicia Alonso's work as a choreographer.

The Choreographic Art of Alicia Alonso is a reference work for students, researchers, and those interested in the subject, as well as an important resource for the teaching of this art in ballet schools.

The cover also features an image of the artist in the ballet Dido abandonada, a choreography by Alicia Alonso that received the Award for Best Choreography presented at the 45th Edinburgh International Festival in 1991.
