On March 14, 1892, the first number of the Patria newspaper , created by José Martí in New York, came to light. In addition to an informative function, it fulfilled another equally or more important than this: to unite Cubans around the common goal of freeing the Island from the Spanish clutches and forging a politically formed and responsible revolutionary consciousness.

In its pages, the reader could find various sections, such as: «The Political Situation», «Heroes, War», «Revolutionary Primer», «The News», «Fire Graneado», «Pinchazos» and «Notes of the Colony» , among other. Also the Bases of the Cuban Revolutionary Party , its members, information about the revolutionary clubs, patriotic, recreational activities and other topics of interest.

His collaborators included Tomás Estrada Palma , Manuel Sanguily , Gonzalo de Quesada , Manuel de la Cruz and Federico Sánchez . The administration of it was carried out by J. A. Agramonte , Gonzalo de Quesada, Enrique José Varona and Manuel Moré . With the death of the apostle, the newspaper dedicated an issue to his figure, and in his place Enrique José Varona took over the address. From number 176 it was the Official Organ of the Cuban Revolutionary Party. Until October 1895.

Patria had a weekly frequency and from October 5, 1995 until its last edition it was published twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The print run amounted to just over 1,500 copies and was published at 120 Front Street in New York. The last edition of the newspaper was on December 31, 1898 in New York.

To honor the appearance date of this important newspaper, since the early 1990s, March 14 is celebrated as Cuban Press Day.
