Sixty years after its first screening, the Cinematheque of Cuba is proposing a trip back in time with the presentation of films that marked its beginnings in the cultural scene of the country.
In this regard, the exhibition of a restored copy of Battleship Potemkin (1925), by Sergei M. Eisenstein, a film that opened the billboard of this institution in 1961 and now inaugurates the cycle of projections in the 23 y 12 Theater, in this capital, stands out.
According to the Cubacine website, this film examines Eisenstein’s aesthetic work, which despite being commissioned, managed to create a free and personal version of historical events.
The program for the first day also includes the screening of the German documentary “On the Trail of Battleship Potemkin”, by Artem Demen, which narrates the restoration process of this classic motion picture through different versions of the piece, interviews with scholars and the composer in charge of reconstructing the original score.
For the closing session of the commemorative program, the projection of The Mother (1926), by Vsevolod Pudovkin, is scheduled. It is a free adaptation of the homonymous novel by Maxim Gorki and the first feature film of the trilogy also includes The End of St. Petersburg and Tempest Over Asia.
Along with the screening of iconic films that are representative of Soviet cinema, the public will also watch the 466th and 467th issues of Noticiero ICAIC Latino Americano, a weekly news reel created in 1960 by Cuban documentary maker Santiago Alvarez.
