The art work entitled “Maria Cristina” by Cuban Julio Cesar Garcia, who has his workshop in this western Cuban city, is part of the art pieces included in an exhibit to mark the 50th birthday of the Soho Photo Gallery, a institution promoting artistic photography in New York City.
The artist told ACN that the exhibit, to open January 7, will look at the performance of the gallery over the past half century, as it was founded in 1971 by photographers with the New York Times newspaper.
The Soho Photo Gallery works as a cooperative, since its members sponsor its work and promote the exhibit as well as the participation of young artists.
In September 2019, the gallery exhibited the first Cuban artistic sample entitled “El Reino de este Mundo” (The Kingdom of this World), a series which also includes “Maria Cristina,” the artist said. The “El Reino de este Mundo” is a photo series which has received multiple awards at international events.
The gallery webpage https://sohophotogallery.betterworld.org explains that the pieces will be on display at the exhibit “Looking Back: Soho, Photo’s First 50 Years” January 7-30 including a photo auction to contribute to the development of innovative photography at the gallery.
