The city of Gibara, in the Cuban province of Holguin, was recently proclaimed part of the Network of Heritage Cities of our country.
Along with residents and authorities of the city of Holguin, the ceremony was attended by the executive secretary of the Network, Patricia Rodriguez, who granted the accreditation of admission.
The president of the Municipal Assembly of People's Power in Gibara thanked on behalf of its citizens for the decision taken by the national institution.
Among the cities integrated to the network are Baracoa, Santiago de Cuba, Bayamo, Camagüey, Trinidad, Sancti Spíritus, Havana, Remedios, Cienfuegos, Matanzas, Guanabacoa and Viñales.
Gibara is considered to be the most important colonial architectural complex in Holguin. The Historical Center of the city was declared National Monument in 2004 by the National Commission of Monuments.
It is, in addition, a city with a great cultural force, it has the Museum of Natural History of Gibara, the Church of San Fulgencio, the neoclassical mansion that contains the Museum of Art and the Museum of Municipal History, and the municipal library Armando Leyva Balaguer, inaugurated in 1945, the oldest of the province of Holguin.
The Network of Office of the Historian of Cuba was founded in December 2008, during the VII International Meeting on Management and Administration of Historical Centers, with the purpose of promoting the exchange and transfer of knowledge in the field of urban rehabilitation and the recovery of the national patrimony.
