The knowledge held by Cuban light rum masters was added today to UNESCO’s list of intangible heritage.
The international organization congratulated Cuba after its candidacy was endorsed at the 17th session of the Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Morocco.
Ambassador Yahima Esquivel, Cuban ambassador to UNESCO, thanked those present on behalf of the Cuban delegation and stressed that this registration will preserve the value of intangible cultural heritage associated with the oral transmission of rum-making knowledge and traditions based on the handcrafted environment-friendly manufacture of natural, indigenous products of great historical, cultural and symbolic value for the communities.
Some Cuban light rum masters attending the event described their work as more than just a group of abilities or the distiller’s taste and smell training and even involves a cultural and historical dimension linked to the emergence, rise and development of the Cuban nation.
