The works the National Museum of Fine Arts currently houses have a legitimate and profitable social use, hence the rejection to withdraw pieces made by Cuban artists from its collections.
In response to some artists' request referring to the absence of their works in the public display and online, the cultural institution stressed that it regularly acquires works by Cuban authors from all generations and trends, as of the state budget funds.
The text stated that no situation, unaware to the museum, can violate this procedure and recalled that the museum has not assumed any extra-artistic consideration to make up its collection, of highest value and intended to enrich the spiritual life of the population.
According to the Museum of Fine Arts, respect for value of works, attachment to the historical contexts and understanding of freedoms related to the nature of art predominate and, such a way of acting, responds to an inclusive and transparent cultural policy with high priority to the access to the best Cuban and universal achievements.
This institution houses, restores, preserves, promotes and studies the works that are part of the plastic heritage in Cuba and it has the most significant compendium of Cuban art, from the 16th century to the present day, among them, the 19th-century colonial engravings.
