Playwright and writer Eugenio Hernández, author of essential works on the Cuban theater scene, received the 2020 National Literature Prize awarded by the Cuban Book Institute.

The COVID-19 pandemic delayed the delivery of the award to the writer, who obtained it the day before from home and dedicated it to those who give their lives to defend the scene and the letters.

Regarding the celebration of Cuban Book Day, the national awards for Social and Humanistic Sciences, and for the 2020 Edition, were also awarded at the headquarters of the Ministry of Culture.

The award in these specialties this time went to Ibrahim Hidalgo de Paz and Mercy Ruiz, both recognized as prominent figures for Cuban literature in areas such as research and promotion.

Regarding Hidalgo de Paz, the jury highlighted "his extensive path in research and his copious and contributing work that has led him, above all, in the field of Marti studies and the History of Cuba."

When referring to the work of Mercy Ruiz, they praised her contribution as "editor, manager and promoter of the book, as well as a partner in important milestones in the history of books in Cuba."

The awards were given by the Minister of Culture, Alpidio Alonso, and the president of the Cuban Book Institute, Juan Rodríguez Cabrera.

Among Hernández's emblematic texts, Mi socio Manolo, Calixta Comité, Emelina Cundiamor or Lagarto Pisabonito stand out, who raised a series of endearing characters, with whom generations of Cubans have identified.

His work also highlights the theater piece María Antonia for its authentic character and being a reflection of the revolutionary stage that began in Cuba in 1959, which has several international anthologies.

The highest award for Cuban letters joins his artistic career together with the National Theater Award he received for his performance as stage director and general director of the TeatroCaribeñoCompany.

His work is deeply rooted in the identity of Cuba and has represented numerous playwrights from Latin America and the Caribbean with a clear vision of the African roots that characterize the continent.
