The 15th Havana Biennial, which involves 172 Cuban artists and 230 foreigners, 61 percent of them from countries of the so-called Global South, opened on Friday and will last until February 28, 2025.

Biennial director Nelson Ramirez de Arellano told Prensa Latina that the event, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary, will include an overview of Cuban art during this period and will conclude with the screening of a documentary film with interviews with significant figures from several previous Biennal events.

Ramirez de Arellano stressed that the Biennial will hold tributes and keynote speeches on December 6 and 8 dedicated to the birthday of Cuban painter Wifredo Lam, a source of inspiration for these events and was recognized as the most universal Cuban artist.

He pointed out that the Havana Biennials’ viewpoint is to showcase the contemporary art of the nations of the Global South and involve the audience, reflected in the premise of this edition: Shared Horizons.

Organized by the Wifredo Lam Cultural Center, the 15th Havana Biennial promotes a retrospective and decolonizing vision through a dialogue among artists from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Organizers said this artistic event has been recognized worldwide for four decades and includes activities in the provinces of Pinar del Rio, Matanzas, and Holguin.
