Havana has a property that could be said to be a "must-see" for every Cuban and foreigner who reaches the oldest part of the city: Martí's little house .
With yellow walls and blue doors, the José Martí Birthplace Museum, located on what is now Calle Leonor Pérez (formerly Paula) , is one of the many places in the capital that reminds us of our Apostle.
Despite the fact that Martí lived in various countries of the world during his adult life, his first years of life were spent in Havana, here is the Church of Santo Ángel Custodio (located in Loma del Ángel), where he was baptized; the San Pablo Superior School for Men (today Rafael María de Mendive Primary School) where he completed his primary studies; and the quarries of San Lázaro (today Fragua Martiana), where he was sentenced to forced labor.
To all these capital sites are added those that today bear his name, schools of different teachings, the National Library, the airport ... the presence of Martí is in every corner of Havana .
Although it was impossible to trace any phrase of the Apostle about Havana, from Cubaliteraria we share some of his phrases and pay tribute to such an illustrious son of a city that has just turned 501 years old:
- There are three things that each person should do in their lifetime: plant a tree, have a child, and write a book.
- Knowing how to read is knowing how to walk. Knowing how to write is knowing how to ascend.
- The weapon is to wound, and the word to heal wounds.
- Ignorance kills peoples, and ignorance must be killed.
- Verses of greatness are made, but poetry is only made of sentiment.
