The artistic-youth project La Jeringa began to be part of Havana's cultural life on January 31, 2020, with the mission of uniting those who were willing to work in favor of art.
Talking about film productions was the first and only guideline of the project, however, the period of isolation imposed by COVID-19 led to new ideas and their expansion in the digital scenario.
The founder and leader of La Jeringa, Annette Granda Barroso, explained to Radio Enciclopedia that in that stage of pandemic "we realized that there were other art and culture production projects, then, looking for an authentic side, we incorporated different types of initiatives. We also took advantage of the tools of social media: in the case of Telegram, the voice chat.
"Our job is to make the work of young Cuban artists known," Granda Barroso assures with an inclusive tone that occupies space in reality through interaction with students and graduates of the academies. In addition to the thematic weeks, we have conducted several interviews with representatives of different artistic manifestations, offering special treatment to dance, theater and cinema. But at the same time, the beauty of our project is that it manages to mix the manifestations, because they are not very distant from each other."
A virtual section entitled Cromatherapy served as a platform for the most authentic results of this mixture. From there, the pieces that made up the collective exhibition of the same name were taken, which was shown from February 16 to March 15 this year at the Habana Espacios Creativos creation and reflection center.
Granda Barroso says that "the first time we used the word Chromatherapy was in a photography contest: everything was virtual because of the pandemic. That exhibition was the first virtual event in which we showed ourselves as a project, because we had no idea of everything involved in organizing such an event. Then the word was used to identify the section in which the photos, illustrations and drawings are published together with the texts."
The exhibition was a tribute to the two years of the project and its organizers' first major encounter with the public in a physical space. A total of 23 works made up this exhibition that involved 19 young artists from photography, illustration, drawing and painting. "Among the artists are Víctor Manuel Cervantes, Alejandro Albuernes, Jorge Hernández, Kevin Oramas, Kevin Sánchez; and among the writers Samuel Salinas, Daniela Arteaga, Varela Leyva, Claudia Batista and Mirian Delgado, just to mention a few names."
While Cromatherapy was available to the public at the cultural venue located at the intersection of Habana and Teniente Rey streets, in the municipality of Old Havana, several collateral activities were held. On March 8, for example, the La Jeringa team held a meeting with its followers.
After March 15, the closing date of the exhibition, other actions occupied the team in its efforts to "inject art and culture". At two o'clock in the afternoon of March 18, Internet users will be able to exchange with Annette Granda Barroso and other people through La Jeringa's official Instagram account. From a varied, open and open-minded project, the reasons to create and reflect on the issues addressed, in real life and cyberspace, increase every day.
