The meeting between two legends of 20th-century dance, the Cuban prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso and the Russian dancer Rudolf Nureyev, who are considered by critics to be exceptional performers of 20th-century dance, was captured by the Spanish-born Argentinean artist Oscar Pipkin.
This event can be seen in the exhibition "Alicia Alonso and Rudolf Nuréyev", which will be on display from Wednesday 22 December until 30 January 2022, at the Casa Museo de la Obra Pía in Havana, located on Obrapía, entre Mercaderes y San Ignacio, in the Historic Center of Havana.
The initiative is part of the actions carried out in Cuba to celebrate the 101st anniversary of the legendary Cuban dancer's birth.
With the particularity of being an essential testimony of the only meeting of these unique performers, in Palma de Mallorca, on 31 July 1990, the date on which these dancers united their talent.
On that date, they performed "Poème de l'amour et de la mer, op. 19" (Poem of Love and the Sea), with music by the French composer Ernest Chausson and choreography by the Cuban Alberto Méndez, during the 1st Palma International Music and Dance Festival.
They were accompanied by the famous soprano Victoria de los Ángeles and eight dancers from the Ballet Nacional de Cuba. Photographer Oscar Pipkin was in charge of visually documenting the event, and some of the photographs were published in international newspapers.
The exhibition offers a complete selection of this photographic work by Pipkin, who recorded the event with around forty black and white photographs.
The exhibition, open to the public from 23 December, is organized by the Consejo Nacional de Patrimonio Cultural, in conjunction with the Museo Nacional de la Danza, the Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad, and the co-sponsorship of the Oficina Cultural de la Embajada de España.
