The legacy and transcendence of the mythical Cuban dancer Alicia Alonso - an icon of Latin American and world dance - is revered in the Numismatic Museum, through the presentation of a series of commemorative coins.
This special tribute is part of the activities that the Havana City Historian's Office, together with other institutions in the country, has been carrying out since 22 December 2021 to pay a well-deserved tribute to the prima ballerina assoluta on the centenary of her birth.
The numismatic pieces were produced by the Empresa de Impresos de Seguridad, attached to the Cuban Mint, and evoke the unique figure of Alicia Alonso, who is considered the cornerstone of the National Ballet of Cuba, prima ballerina assoluta of Latin America, and the last great ballet legend of the 20th century.
This exhibition can be enjoyed by the Cuban and foreign public at the Numismatic Museum, located at 305 de la Calle Obispo, entre Aguiar y Habana, in the former headquarters of the Banco Mendoza.
This institution, created in 1975 on the initiative of Raúl León Torras, then president of the Banco Nacional de Cuba, is the only one of its kind in the world.
The museum has three rooms displaying more than a thousand medals, coins, and banknotes from different parts of the world, especially Latin America.
All Cuban banknotes from the mid-19th century to the present day are also displayed in chronological order.
Among the most interesting pieces are the first coins minted by order of the Catholic Monarchs, a chest containing more than one hundred US gold coins, and the historic banknotes signed in 1869 by the first president of the Republic of Cuba in Arms, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes.
