Spanish director and screenwriter Manuel Gutierrez Aragon will receive this Tuesday the Tomas Gutierrez Alea International Film Award, in the context of the 41st edition of the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana.
Promoted by the Association of Film, Radio and Television of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), the award will be presented this afternoon to Gutierrez Aragon, member of the Royal Academy of Arts of San Fernando.
Gutierrez Aragon has seen a prolific career, that includes feature films, shorts, documentaries and television series.
His works include his first film 'Habla, mudita' (1973), Oscar nominee and winner of the Critics Award at the Berlin Festival in 1973; and 'Camada negra' (1977), Grand Prix of the Berlin Festival and Silver Bear for Best Director.
Having received numerous distinctions and awards, Gutierrez Aragon also received the most prestigious film prize of his home country in 2004, the Spanish Film Academy Gold Medal (2013) and the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts (2013).
The Tomas Gutierrez Alea International Film Award was presented to Puerto Rican actor Benicio del Torro in 2009; to US actor Danny Glover in 2011; and to Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami in 2016.
The award is granted on special occasions and seeks to recognize prominent personalities of international film who maintain close ties with UNEAC and Cuba.
