Covid-19 pandemic has blanked out decades of progress towards gender equality, and now it is critical to guarantee a more inclusive scenario that factors in women´s role and leadership, this is precisely why UN Secretary-General António Guterres spoke out for on the occasion of the International Women's Day (Monday, March 8).

In his message, Guterres stressed that relief and stimulus packages for the pandemic should specifically target women and girls, including through investments in their businesses and health-care work.

In Guterres' viewpoint, health crisis recovery is the opportunity to leave years of exclusion and inequity behind.

This 2021 International Women's Day celebration is focused on recognizing women´s great efforts for a more equal future.

Most of the countries successfully curbed the spread of Covid-19 and responded to the socioeconomic impacts generated by this scenario are headed by women, Guterres said.

The pandemic also meant new barriers: increased domestic violence, unpaid caregiving, unemployment and abject poverty.

To defend women´s rights and seize on their full potential, women and girls´ outlooks must be integrated into both formulation and implementation of recovery policies and programs.
