One of the most surprising trips to Cuba is related to Cienaga de Zapata (Zapata Swamp), an outstanding wetland that attracts the gaze of tourists from all over the world.

This scenery has a great record of flora and fauna, a true Cuban feast for the senses of travelers seeking adventure and active relaxation. Experiencing a wetland is a novel proposal, full of color and surprises.

It is one of the most interesting places in Cuba, in the south-western region, with an exceptional panorama of various types of marsh ecosystems.

It is a site of low, marshy and semi-marshy plains, located on peat and limestone deposits, with hydromorphic soils and natural Savannah vegetation.

As can be expected, this kind of scenery is perfect for taking photographs and having a privileged walk on holidays, due to its high aesthetic value, with spaces such as La Laguna del Tesoro (Treasure Lagoon) and the Hatiguanico River Basin, the main waterway in the area, as well as Playa Larga and Playa Giron (Bay of Pigs).

The area has forests on limestone and poorly drained parts, and mangroves.

In addition, there are large, generally floodable extensions where the marsh grassland grows, formed by Cortadera, Palmacana, Arraijan, Yana and Guanito, among others.

Its fauna is privileged where the Santo Tomas Gallinuela and the Ferminia, birds exclusive to the area and considered to have the most restricted habitat in the world, can be found.

In addition, more than 100 species of birds can be watched, including Zunzuncito, Cabrerito de la Cienaga, Gavilan Colilargo, Catey, Cotorra and Paloma Perdiz, of which there are large concentrations throughout the year, all of them from Cuba.

On the other hand, the Zapata Swamp constitutes a natural refuge for thousands of migratory birds from North America.

There are 16 species of reptiles, including Cuban and American crocodiles, iguanas, lizards, boa, and various types of frogs.
