Just listening to a few chords of his exquisite music unleashes the most diverse emotions, because it is always impregnated with that lyricism that only the sensitivity of his inspiration promotes from the deep and intimate expression of his feelings, and no further introduction is needed, just to recognize that this is the outstanding musician and pianist Frank Fernández Tamayo.

Frank has been considered a genius on the piano; from the age of four he began to show signs of his talent by performing, by ear, melodies that his mother taught the pupils at the music school in Mayarí, the town where he was born on 16 March 1944.

The list of praises is extensive, both from critics, conductors and musicians, as well as from the general public. This Cuban pianist has captivated everyone with his virtuosity, as he is capable of performing a repertoire that begins with the classics and goes all the way to electro-acoustic music, including popular music in Cuba and beyond its borders.

Frank Fernández has the versatility to perform as a soloist with the most famous symphony orchestras in the world, while also being able to tour with the greatest singers of the Nueva Trova.

In his youth, came the most solid education; first in Havana and then in Moscow, at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, from where he graduated with a Gold Degree, and has allowed him to assume with discipline and study that family talent that he began to cultivate as a child. However, his professional career began in 1959, in his own words, as a pianist of popular music.

With great talent and passion for music, but also with effort and determination, he became a great pianist and composer, and later an outstanding orchestrator, record producer, show organizer and cultural promoter, facets that he enjoys to the extreme, together with his love and dedication to teaching.

That is why, according to his public and those who know the subject, he is a great teacher, in every sense of the word, not only because of the dozens of good musicians he has trained, including in the Cuban piano school - from which his disciples have won dozens of international prizes, but also for his permanent teaching in the defense of what is Cuban, what is autochthonous, of not abandoning one's roots, of not moving away from the homeland, because Frank Fernández is, and it is good to emphasize this, among those who preferred to cultivate music from their land in order to also advance their country; those ties have been indestructible.

His people recognize and respect him, applaud him to the point of rapture for the magic he conveys with his hands on the piano, for the emotion he provokes in each of his performances, in which his presence alone ensures the quality of the show. And he knows, because he has confessed it, that “he is still moved by the effects produced by music”, when Frank himself is all about music.

His artistic work - spanning 62 years - and his contribution to culture have earned him important national and international recognition, are part of Cuba's musical memory and preserve that authentic desire to treasure and safeguard national identity.

In addition to being recognized as Doctor Honoris Causa in Art, his chest has been awarded the Distinction for National Culture and the Félix Varela Order of the First Degree, the Rafael Alberti Prize for “contributions to humanity”, the “Coat of Arms of Bogotá”, among others.

Frank Fernández has written almost 700 works for different formats and musical genres, for the stage as ballets, also works for popular music groups, soundtracks for cinema and television (in the series La gran rebelión, and the soap operas Tierra brava and Cuando el agua regresa a la tierra to the work for the documentary Roberto Chile), as well as for the radio.

It is magnificent to listen to his Suite for two pianos entitled Zapateo por derecho, El vuelo del moscardón, La conga de los Hoyos or his version of Franz Schubert's Ave María, with the same sublime feeling when enjoying the musical pieces offered in the two concerts that, together with the singer Silvio Rodríguez, the flautist Niurka González and the trio Trovarroco, they performed in the neighborhoods of Atarés and Pogolotti, in the Havana capital.

Inspired by the Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, he composed the works Tema de la esperanza, Tema de la soledad, and Amor, while he gives his most faithful public, the one that fills the theaters and squares to see and hear him, the Canto a mis abuelos, his most recent recording.

For the glory of Cuba, Frank Fernández grows spiritually and musically every day, with the youthful determination that accompanies him in his 77 years and the permanent affiliation to his people, to his land, to his Revolution, which he has also made great. Congratulations, maestro!
