Oderquis Revé and his orchestra offer a true master class on changüí every time they perform, and it couldn’t be in any other way in this Estamos Contigo online concert. The concert was broadcasted this Monday, March 21st, by Canal Clave, the Cuban Institute of Music’s Facebook page, and the Ministry of Culture’s YouTube channel.
With the style that identifies them, the band made clear on stage that changüí is not only a very specific Cuban genre you can dance to, but it is also a way of having fun, with a close gesture-music relationship that invites the amateur dancer to move non-stop.
The orchestra known as Oderquis Revé y su Changüí was founded by its director Oderquis Revé Matos; a musician born in Guantanamo, who is a noted percussionist, acknowledged by the specialized critics as the first percussionist to play three batá drums, and also the first to introduce that instrument in popular dance music, which is a practice that is, without doubt, one of the original elements of son music.
With his orchestra, Oderquis has reaped successes and popularity as much in Cuba and abroad, and his music has travelled every corner of the country, as well as prestigious stages in Mexico, France, Belgium, Holland, among others.
We witnessed that great party that is a concert by Oderquis Revé and his orchestra; a night when we enjoyed their contagious rhythm and in which we became –for half an hour at least- authentic changüiceros.
