The news spread like wildfire through the Mexican press, as a result of the agreement of the University Council of the Autonomous University of Zacatecas (UAZ), to grant the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of that high house of studies to the renowned singer-songwriter. Cuban, Pablo Milanes.

The official delivery of the title will take place on September 26, at the Fernando Calderón university theater in the city of Zacatecas, as part of the celebrations for the 190th anniversary of the founding of the UAZ Francisco García Salinas.

In the opinion prepared by the members of the Honor and Merit Commission, it is highlighted that:

As an author his work is characterized by poetic and profound texts, and as a performer he has exploited almost all genres of Cuban and Latin American popular music.

Among other arguments, mention is made of his participation in the founding of the Cuban Nueva Trova Movement and the ICAIC Sound Experimentation Group, together with Silvio Rodríguez and Noel Nicola; as well as being the author of more than 400 songs and participating on several occasions in the Cultural Festival of Zacatecas.

Milanés participated in the Zacatecan festival in 2012, recently recovered from an emergency operation he underwent a month earlier. In 2016 he appeared in the Plaza de Armas of this city in central Mexico, as part of the festival itself.

On that occasion, he considered it an honor to participate in the cultural event and assured that it was a pleasure to sing in front of the Cathedral, a jewel of local and national architecture. The Cuban artist was also given the Minero de Plata award for his participation in this edition of the Festival, and for making one of the most anticipated presentations on the main stage memorable.
