Tribute to Cuban pianist Ernesto Lecuona will open April’s concerts

As a tribute to renowned Cuban pianist Ernesto Lecuona, Havana will host a varied program to on the 60th anniversary of his death.

The legendary Marti Theater will host a concert dedicated to the eminent musician, who was born in the Havana municipality of Guanabacoa, where world-renowned figures such as Ignacio Villa (Bola de Nieve) or Rita Montaner were born as well.

Considered one of the most outstanding Cuban musicians, together with Gonzalo Roig and Rodrigo Prats, Lecuona is part of the most important trilogy of composers in Cuba’s lyric theater, especially zarzuela (a Spanish lyrical genre).

Lecuona’s most significant contribution to that theatrical genre is the definitive formula of Cuban romance.

On April 2, the public will enjoy a very diverse staff of singers and instrumentalists who will make the show an event worthy of Lecuona and his significance for Cuban culture. Sopranos. Tenors and baritones will sing songs composed by the remarkable pianist (August 1896-November 1963), who is the author of the internationally known and sung “La Comparsa.”

Cuban musicians such as acclaimed flutist Niurka Gonzalez and Spanish clarinetist Igor Urruchi will be part of this gift to the maestro, while the Vocal Leo Chamber Choir and the National Concert Band will also participate in the commemoration.
