Un llamado urgente: en defensa de la paz y la soberanía de Nuestra América

Declaración de la Casa de las Américas

La Casa de las Américas, fiel a su vocación de más de seis décadas de tender puentes culturales en nuestro continente, alza su voz.

El 3 de enero, la paz de Nuestra América fue brutalmente quebrada. De nuevo en este siglo, una nación latinoamericana fue violentamente atacada por la maquinaria militar estadounidense. Nuestro continente, declarado zona de paz, vio sus principios pisoteados por las bombas y el secuestro ilegítimo de un Presidente constitucional.

A esta agresión contra Venezuela, le siguen ahora las amenazas de saquear los recursos de su pueblo y de extender la ofensiva a otros países hermanos.

Frente a esta flagrante violación del derecho internacional y a este ultraje a la dignidad de todos los pueblos, hacemos un llamado claro y firme.

Exigimos, con la fuerza de la razón y la justicia:

1. La liberación inmediata e incondicional del Presidente constitucional de Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, y de su esposa, Cilia Flores.
2. El cese de toda injerencia extranjera y el respeto absoluto a la soberanía y la autodeterminación del pueblo venezolano.

Invitamos a todas las personas en los Estados Unidos y en el mundo, conscientes de la humanidad que nos une y del valor de la paz, a sumarse a este llamado. Defender a Venezuela hoy es defender la soberanía de todos los pueblos y el derecho a un futuro sin guerras en nuestra América.

An Urgent Call: In Defense of Peace and Sovereignty in the Americas

Casa de las Americas, true to its vocation of over six decades of building cultural bridges in our continent, raises its voice.

On January 3rd, the peace of the Americas was brutally shattered. Once again in this century, a Latin American nation was violently attacked by the US military machine. Our continent, declared a zone of peace, saw its principles trampled by bombs and the illegal kidnapping of a constitutional President.

To this aggression against Venezuela now follow threats to plunder the resources of its people and to extend the offensive to other countries in the region.

Faced with this flagrant violation of international law and this outrage to the dignity of all peoples, we issue a clear and firm call.

We demand, with the force of reason and justice:

1. The immediate and unconditional release of the constitutional President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores.
2. The end of all foreign interference and absolute respect for the sovereignty and self-determination of the Venezuelan people.

We invite all people in the United States and the world, conscious of the humanity that unites us and the value of peace, to join this call. To defend Venezuela today is to defend the sovereignty of all peoples and the right to a future without wars in the Americas.
